When Lisa discovers that her 37-year-old patient has been dating her 23-year-old son, she is beset by a professional concern that is the classic stuff of comedic conflict: Should she continue to treat this patient and how?

W., an Upper West Side therapist who loves too much: She loves patients like Rafi (Uma Thurman), her eldest son David (Bryan Greenberg), and her religion (Judaism).

Especially since she discovered this long after a strong therapeutic bond had developed with her client, the therapist is faced with an ethical dilemma of whether to disclose her realization to the client and face the significant inevitable ensuing complications. At the same time, the therapist's concerns for her son are the age difference and the fact the Rafi is not Jewish.

After consulting with her own therapist/consultant, Lisa Metzger continues the sessions, during which she hears much more about the intimate aspects of the client and son's relationship than any of them would choose. Because Metzger believes that religion is paramount in a person's life, she urges him strongly to let go of Rafi and marry within his faith. The therapy is terminated with the client feeling betrayed and, subsequently, being received through the "family" door as the girlfriend of the therapist's son. Lisa Metzger finds herself in a dual relationship and a conflict of interest as the mother of her client's boyfriend.

Among Streep's 79 acting credits, we found 23 feature films for which she earned zero major acting award nominations. There's never enough room for every awardworthy actress to receive a nomination, but considering both Amy Adams (much praised for her performance in get nominated? The film shows how this relationship affects people who know the two of them, including Rafi's therapist, Lisa Metzger (Meryl Streep).November 15, 2005 Reprinted with permission of The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles. But her character also is more deeply plagued by a concern that is tragedy for her: Her son is dating a woman who is not Jewish."It's that exclusionary nature of religion that I do have a problem with." If it's true that artists make a statement in their work--consider Jewish artists like Chaim Potok, Philip Roth, Woody Allen--then perhaps Prime is Younger's way of sending a message in a bottle to the Jewish community.
